Compress a photo to 50 KB

50 KB is one of the most common photo limits on job, exam and government portals. Get your photo under it with your face still sharp.

How to get a photo under 50 KB

  1. Choose your photo. Phone photos, scans and HEIC files from iPhones all work.
  2. Keep the target at 50 KB, or type a different limit.
  3. Select Compress images and download the JPG.

Tips for a photo that gets accepted

Check the minimum size too

Many forms reject files that are too small as well as too large, for example “between 20 KB and 50 KB”. The result shows the exact file size, so you can confirm it falls inside the range before uploading.

Taking a photo that compresses well

A clean, evenly lit photo stays sharp at 50 KB; a dark, noisy one turns blotchy. Before compressing:

  1. Stand against a plain white or light wall, facing a window or soft light, so there are no strong shadows on your face.
  2. Ask someone to take the photo from about 1 metre away at eye level, rather than taking a selfie at arm's length, which distorts the face.
  3. Look straight at the camera with a neutral expression, ears and eyebrows visible, and no cap or dark glasses unless the rules allow them.
  4. Crop to head and shoulders, so the face takes up most of the frame.

Typical photo rules on Indian application forms

RequirementCommon examples
File size20 to 50 KB, sometimes up to 100 or 200 KB
Dimensions200 × 230 px, or 3.5 × 4.5 cm (413 × 531 px at 300 DPI)
FormatJPG or JPEG
BackgroundWhite or light coloured
RecencyTaken within the last 3 to 6 months

These are common patterns, not the rules of any particular exam. Each notification lists its own requirements, and they change from year to year. When the form gives exact dimensions as well as a size, use the photo and signature resizer, which handles both.

Common reasons a photo is rejected

Printing the same photo

If you also need printed copies, the passport photo sheet maker arranges many copies on one A4 page or 4 × 6 photo paper.

Questions

Is the photo uploaded?

Your files never leave your device. The conversion runs inside your browser, so nothing is uploaded to a server and there are no daily limits.

The form says 50 KB, should I aim for exactly 50?

Aim slightly lower, such as 45 KB. Some portals count a kilobyte as 1,000 bytes rather than 1,024, so a file at exactly 50 KB can be rejected.

Can I do this on my phone?

Yes. Open this page in your phone browser and choose the photo from your gallery.
