Convert WebP to PNG
Images saved from websites are often WebP. Convert them to PNG so they open in any editor, document or app, with transparency kept.

How to convert WebP to PNG
- Choose or drop one or more WebP images.
- Select Convert to PNG.
- Download the PNG files individually or as a ZIP.
Why you end up with WebP files
Most large websites serve images as WebP because it loads faster than JPG or PNG. When you right-click and save an image, you get the WebP file. Older photo viewers, Microsoft Office versions, some print services and many upload forms still reject it.
PNG keeps transparency
Logos, icons and stickers in WebP format often have a transparent background. Converting to PNG keeps that transparency, so the image still sits cleanly on top of slides, documents and designs. If you do not need transparency and want a smaller file, use WebP to JPG.
Respect image rights
Converting a file does not change who owns it. Only reuse images you have permission to use.
What WebP is and why websites use it
WebP is an image format released by Google in 2010. It supports both lossy compression, like JPG, and lossless compression, like PNG, along with transparency and animation. Because WebP files are usually 25 to 35% smaller than comparable JPG or PNG files, most large websites, online shops and content delivery networks now serve images as WebP to load pages faster.
The side effect is that images you save from the web often arrive as .webp files, which some tools still do not handle well.
Programs that may not open WebP
- Older versions of Microsoft Office, Windows Photo Viewer and some print software.
- Government, exam and job application portals that only accept JPG or PNG.
- Some email clients, older Android galleries and design tools set up before WebP became common.
PNG or JPG: which to choose
| Choose PNG when | Choose JPG when |
|---|---|
| The image has a transparent background, such as a logo or sticker | The image is a photo with no transparency |
| You will edit the image further | You need a small file to share or upload |
| It contains text, diagrams or screenshots that must stay sharp | A form or website asks for JPG |
For photos, WebP to JPG gives a much smaller file than PNG.
Troubleshooting
- Only the first frame converted: animated WebP files contain several frames. The converter saves the first frame as a still image.
- The PNG is much bigger than the WebP: this is expected. PNG stores every pixel without lossy compression.
- The file will not open at all: check the file really is WebP. Some sites serve AVIF images, which also work here if your browser is up to date.
Questions
Is it free and unlimited?
Yes. Because conversion happens on your device, there are no daily caps, sign-ups or watermarks.
Is the image uploaded anywhere?
Your files never leave your device. The conversion runs inside your browser, so nothing is uploaded to a server and there are no daily limits.
Can I convert animated WebP?
The converter saves the first frame as a still PNG. Animated WebP to GIF is not supported yet.
