How to convert PNG to WebP
- Choose or drop your PNG files.
- Pick a quality. Use 90% or higher for screenshots with text.
- Select Convert to WEBP and download.
Smaller files, same transparency
PNG is lossless, which makes graphics and screenshots large. WebP supports transparency like PNG but compresses far better, so a transparent product image or logo is often a fraction of its PNG size. That makes pages load faster, especially on phones.
Good uses
- Product images with transparent backgrounds for online shops.
- Logos and icons on websites and web apps.
- Screenshots in blog posts and documentation.
Lossy or near-lossless?
This converter saves lossy WebP with transparency. At 90% quality and above, logos, icons and screenshots look the same as the PNG to almost everyone while being much smaller. For pixel-art or images where every pixel must be exact, keep the PNG.
Typical savings
| Image | Typical WebP size compared with PNG |
|---|---|
| Product photo with transparent background | 70 to 90% smaller |
| Screenshot with text | 40 to 70% smaller |
| Small flat icon | Similar size; little benefit |
Troubleshooting
- The app I use only accepts PNG: keep the PNG for that app; WebP is mainly for websites.
- Edges of transparent areas look rough: raise the quality to 95%.
- Converting fails in Safari: use Chrome, Edge or Firefox, which can create WebP files.
Questions
Is anything uploaded?
Your files never leave your device. The conversion runs inside your browser, so nothing is uploaded to a server and there are no daily limits.
Is transparency kept?
Yes. WebP supports transparency, so transparent areas in your PNG stay transparent.
Should I convert icons too?
Yes for websites. For apps or tools that only accept PNG, keep the original files.
