How to convert JPG to WebP
- Choose or drop your JPG images.
- Set the quality. 80 to 85% suits most website photos.
- Select Convert to WEBP and download the files.
Why WebP helps your website
At the same visual quality, WebP files are usually 25 to 35% smaller than JPG. Smaller images load faster on mobile data, and page speed is one of the signals search engines use to rank pages. Every current browser displays WebP, so you can use it for product photos, blog images and banners.
When to keep JPG
Some email clients, older office software, print shops and government upload forms still expect JPG. Keep your original JPG files for those uses and serve the WebP versions on your website.
Choosing quality for web images
| Image | Suggested quality |
|---|---|
| Product photos and hero banners | 82 to 88% |
| Blog and article photos | 75 to 82% |
| Thumbnails | 70 to 75% |
Resize images to the largest width your site displays before converting; a 4000-pixel photo shown at 1200 pixels wastes most of its data. Use resize image first, then convert.
Adding WebP images to your website
Most website builders, WordPress, Shopify and modern frameworks accept WebP uploads directly. If you hand-write HTML, a normal img tag pointing at the .webp file works in every current browser.
Troubleshooting
- Safari cannot save WebP: older Safari versions can display WebP but not create it. Use Chrome, Edge or Firefox for converting.
- Colours look slightly different: some photos carry colour profiles that browsers handle differently. Converting at 90% or higher keeps the difference minimal.
Questions
Is anything uploaded?
Your files never leave your device. The conversion runs inside your browser, so nothing is uploaded to a server and there are no daily limits.
Does it work in Safari?
Safari 14 and later can display WebP images. Saving WebP files needs Chrome, Edge or Firefox, and the tool tells you if your browser cannot.
Will the image dimensions change?
No. The width and height stay the same; only the format and file size change.
