Your file is a JPEG XL image. Drop it here to turn it into a JPG that opens everywhere, or use the guide below to view it in an app you already have.

What a .jxl file is

A .jxl file is a JPEG XL image, a newer format that stores photos and graphics in smaller files than JPG. It is a normal picture; it just needs software that understands the format. Renaming the file to .jpg does not work, because the data inside is still JPEG XL.

Why JPEG XL appeared suddenly

Google Chrome began showing JPEG XL images by default in October 2026. Because Chrome is the most used browser, image services can now send .jxl pictures to many more people, so saved images, downloads and attachments increasingly arrive as .jxl. Support in other apps is catching up one program at a time.

Should you keep the .jxl file?

Yes, if your devices open it: JPEG XL files are smaller and keep excellent quality. Convert a copy to JPG when you need to share, upload, print or edit the image in software that does not support the format yet. For images with transparent backgrounds, use JXL to PNG.

Questions

Is anything uploaded?

Your files never leave your device. The conversion runs inside your browser, so nothing is uploaded to a server and there are no daily limits.

Can I just rename .jxl to .jpg?

No. The file contents stay JPEG XL, so most apps will still refuse it. Convert it instead.

Is a .jxl file safe?

It is an image format like JPG or PNG. As with any file, only open images from sources you trust.
